A Message from Steve Kunkel, Ph.D., Interim Chief Scientific Director, and BRCF Leadership

We are pleased to announce that Thomas Wilson MD, Ph.D., Professor of Pathology and Human Genetics, and Olivia Koues, Ph.D., have joined the University of Michigan Medical School DNA Sequencing Core as Faculty Director and Managing Director, respectively.

Dr. Wilson brings a unique blend of expertise in research, clinical knowledge, leadership and scholarship to the position. Throughout his 30+ year career, he has concentrated on genetics and its practical applications. Dr. Wilson is active in clinical and other services, research, and teaching in multiple areas related to molecular biology with an emphasis on DNA sequencing. His primary research focus has been on genome instability and its causes, with a secondary focus on transcription biology.

Dr. Wilson has extensive experience in research and education. He recently finished serving as President of the Environmental Mutagenesis and Genomics Society (EMGS). At the University, he is well-known as an innovative collaborator, partnering with researchers and faculty in multiple departments, with four current grants and more than 65 publications.

Dr. Koues comes to us from Vanderbilt University Medical Center where she worked as the Scientific Research Core Facility Manager of the Genomic Core facility for the past three years. Prior to that, Dr. Koues held positions at Washington University School of Medicine as a research instructor and postdoctoral research associate. She received her bachelor’s degree in applied biology at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Dr. Koues received her Ph.D. in molecular genetics and her master’s degree in biology from Georgia State University.

A strong DNA Sequencing Core is a critical component of our research enterprise at Michigan. Access to genomics services is central to research investigations in many different areas of biomedical science, and I am confident Dr. Wilson and Dr. Koues will continue to build on the strong foundation of the Core, established by retired Faculty Director Dr. Bob Lyons.

We’re delighted to have both Tom and Olivia join the DNA Sequencing Core in its next chapter. Please join us in extending a warm welcome and congratulations to them both.
